St. Mary's Church in Chojna

Chojna and the St. Mary's Church

The St. Mary's Church is one of the biggest and most important medieval brick buildings in the entire Oder region. The commission to plan and build was given to the builder Hinrich Brunsbergh of Stettin, one of the few builders around 1400 that is still widely reknown. He also built for example the St. Jacob's Church in Stettin, St. Stephan in Gartz, St. Catherine in Brandenburg, St. Mary in Stargard as well as the town halls in Tangermünde and in Königsberg/Neumark (Chojna). He developed the Northern German hall church (nave and side aisles of equal height) with an choir gallery and a ring of chapels further. He moved the buttresses as pilasters into the interior of the church. On the outer walls, the rich and colourful brick ornamentation takes on elements of the French and Southern German High Gothic period, which is a characteristic feature of his buildings.
